Macron accuses Erdogan of "not fulfilling his promises regarding Libya

French President Emmanuel Macron accused his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Wednesday of not fulfilling the promises he made regarding ending interference in the Libyan crisis, after the arrival of Turkish ships to Libya.

"I would like to express my concern regarding Turkey's behavior at the present time, which is completely contrary to what President Erdoانan committed to at the Berlin conference," Macron said at a news conference with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

He added, "In recent days, we have seen Turkish ships carrying Syrian mercenaries arriving on Libyan soil. This is a clear and grave violation of what was agreed upon in Berlin."

Macron said that these practices "affect the security of Europe and the African Sahel region".

He added, "He strongly condemns the recent agreement concluded" between the Libyan National Accord government and Turkey on sending Turkish forces to Libya.

The military commander, Khalifa Hifter, is fighting a government against the National Accord in the capital, Tripoli, headed by Fayez Al-Sarraj, which is recognized internationally.

Turkey supports the government of national reconciliation, while France has good relations with the commander of eastern Libya's forces, Khalifa Haftar.
What happened at the Berlin conference?

The leaders of the European Union, Russia, Turkey and other countries met at a conference to discuss the situation in Libya, held in the German capital Berlin on January 19.

The leaders of the participating countries pledged not to interfere in the ongoing civil war in Libya, as well as to support the UN arms embargo on the country.

And the United Nations said on January 25 that many countries that support rival factions in Libya have violated the arms embargo since the Berlin conference, but without naming a particular country.

She added that cargo planes loaded with advanced weapons, armored vehicles, advisers and fighters have reached airports in eastern and western Libya, which threatens "to enter the country in a renewed and intensive round of fighting."
