The organizers of the Dakar Desert Rally, held this year in Saudi Arabia, announced the death of 40-year-old Portuguese cyclist Paulo Gonsalves "after his fall in the seventh stage between Riyadh and Wadi Al-Dawasir today, Sunday.
"The Portuguese driver Paulo Gonçalves has passed away. The Dakar family extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones," he tweeted.
According to the organizers, Gonsalves, who was participating in the rally for the thirteenth time and secondly in the motorcycle class in 2015, fell at the 276 km from the stage, and was unconscious when the medical team arrived to see it, before being transported by helicopter to the hospital where it was announced He died.
Gonçalves began participating in the Dakar Rally in 2006, and finished it in the top ten four times. In the current version, it was ranked 46 by the end of the sixth stage in Riyadh, last Friday, before the participants went to a rest day yesterday, Saturday, and the rally will resume on Sunday.
