A state refuses to transplant organs for non-vaccinated people with the Corona vaccine

As part of the ongoing quest to vaccinate most of the American people against the emerging coronavirus, a health system that includes a number of hospitals in Colorado has announced that it will not perform transplant surgery on unvaccinated patients in most cases, according to “CBS News.”

The UCHealth group announced that it implemented the policy to protect its patients, and added in a statement: “For transplant patients who develop corona, the mortality rate ranges from about 20% to more than 30%.”

"This demonstrates the extreme risk that COVID-19 poses to new organ transplant recipients after their surgeries," the statement continued.

Studies show that corona vaccines available in the United States are highly effective in preventing the disease, and 186 million people have been fully vaccinated so far, equivalent to 56.68% of the US population, according to Johns Hopkins University.

However, some unvaccinated transplant patients in Colorado, a state where 62.05% of the population has been vaccinated, are concerned about the new UCHealth policy.

One woman with stage 5 kidney failure was months away from getting a new kidney, but is now looking for a new hospital where she and her donor have not been vaccinated against the virus.

Jamie Vaughnier, who donates her kidney to Liliani Lotale, said she did not receive the vaccine for religious reasons, and said she will not get the vaccine because there are many unknowns, and according to her also, she does not see the need for vaccinations before the surgery that she is offered.

“At the end of August, they confirmed that there was no need to take the vaccine dose at that time,” Lotale told CBS. “Quickly we got to September 28, when I found out that the hospital had this policy around vaccination for both the donor and the recipient.” .

UCHealth, which sent the two women a letter regarding the vaccine policy, said they were given 30 days to receive the first dose of the vaccine and, if refused, they would be removed from the transplant list.

“I said I would sign a medical waiver, I should sign a waiver anyway for the transplant, absolve them of anything that could go wrong,” Lotale said. Signing a waiver of the dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.”

UCHealth said that the purpose of the vaccine policy is to protect the health of its patients and that transplant centers across the United States have such requirements.

Patients are often required to receive other vaccinations, such as hepatitis B and MMR, before surgery, UCHealth says, as such requirements increase the likelihood of a successful transplant.
