Emmanuel Macron wants two million electrified cars to be produced by 2030 in France. An objective that the industry is trying to set to music at a forced pace.
Margins even more than volumes. While on October 12, Emmanuel Macron set the goal of the French automotive industry to produce 2 million hybrid and electric vehicles in France, by 2030, the industry outlined on Tuesday a roadmap that is primarily focused on the "added value".
Leadership on a green business model
To listen to the thousand professionals gathered this Tuesday in Paris for the second day of the auto sector, organized by the Platform of the automotive sector (PFA), its union, this added value must irrigate all French factories, beyond the even assembly of vehicles at manufacturers. This requires the sector to make a considerable shift in order to be able to produce batteries in France, but also electric motors, power electronics and cathodes while reviewing the foundry trades.
And by taking subcontractors to this turn in order to preserve jobs. "This is a key bet since the supplier ecosystem will depend on three parameters: the number of vehicles produced in France, the nature of the engine mix and cost competitiveness to offer competitive costs to major French equipment manufacturers", summarized François Liotard, CEO of Lisi Automotive.
This transformation should lead France and Europe to "take the lead on a green economic model", facing the Chinese and American giants, explained in the preamble the general manager of Renault, Luca de Meo.
17 billion euros over five years
Renault has already unveiled its project for an industrial hub in the North, dedicated to the electric car. Stellantis unveiled on Tuesday its ambitions to turn its French factories towards the production of electric cars. But then it remains to determine how the industry as a whole will approach this turn, and there, the tracks are lacking. This "major opportunity" for the electric car, as Luca de Meo calls it, also comes at a cost.
"We estimate at 17 billion euros the need for CAPEX at 5 years to be still in the race for this new world of the automobile, essential to guarantee our technological sovereignty", explained in the preamble the president of the PFA Luc Chatel. .
"The implementation of this roadmap will require support […], we are going to need the public authorities and we have presented this project to the government, to the President of the Republic", continues Luc Chatel.
Beyond the colossal sums to transform and improve communication between manufacturers and equipment manufacturers, a crucial question arises: that of customers.
"It is a good objective to produce two million cars, but to be able to succeed in France, there is an additional objective: we must sell and not only in France, but that we go to the conquest of all the territories that we can conquer by the quality of our cars, highlighted Claude Cham, president of the Federation of industries, equipment for vehicles (FIEV). France is today structurally a small market ".
