Ronaldo court victory in Las Vegas rape case
A judge in a Nevada state court has dismissed a lawsuit against Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo for sexual rape.
And the American judge decided, according to what the newspaper "The Guardian" reported, to support Ronaldo's lawyer in the rape case brought by a woman in 2009 who said it took place in Las Vegas.
The newspaper quoted that the judge issued a stinging recommendation against the lawyer of the plaintiff, "Mayorga" and said that the accusation was based on leaked documents and correspondence that her lawyer said took place between Ronaldo and the plaintiff.
"The dismissal of Mayorga's case is due to the improper conduct of her lawyer," Judge Daniel Albrights wrote in his ruling, adding that "unfortunately, it is the only appropriate punishment to ensure the integrity of the judicial process."
Cristiano Ronaldo has denied the allegations against him and will not face criminal charges due to the rape allegations.
Ronaldo's attorney, Peter Christiansen, in Las Vegas issued a statement saying that the player's legal team was "delighted with the court's detailed review (...) and its willingness to apply the law fairly to the facts and to recommend dismissal of the civil case against Ronaldo."
Albrights noted that the court made no determination that Ronaldo committed a crime and found no evidence that his lawyers and representatives "intimidated Mayorga or obstructed law enforcement".
Ronaldo denied Mayorga's allegations. In October 2018, he said: "I vehemently deny the accusations against me. Rape is a hateful crime that goes against everything I believe in."
In 2019, Las Vegas prosecutors said Ronaldo would not face any criminal charges over the allegations.
"Based on a review of the information provided at this time, allegations of sexual assault against Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be substantiated beyond reasonable doubt. Therefore, no charges will be brought," Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said in July 2019.
Former model Catherine Mayorga claimed that Ronaldo raped her in a Las Vegas hotel in 2009. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star reached a financial settlement with her after the incident, but he denied the allegations of sexual assault, stressing through his lawyer that he had an affair with her "with complete satisfaction." .
Mayorga filed a lawsuit in a Nevada state court, claiming $200,000 in compensation, accusing the player of raping her on June 13, 2009 in his suite in a Las Vegas hotel, and that he paid her $375,000 to sign an agreement in which she pledged not to talk about what happened.
The Portuguese star found himself in a crisis after the accusations made against him, which he strongly denied, considering that rape is a "disgraceful crime" without denying through the defense team that he signed a settlement with Mayorga, but "this agreement does not mean recognition ... everything Ronaldo did." He is taking the advice given to him by his advisors to put an end to these scandalous accusations against him that tarnish his reputation,” said his lawyer, Peter Christiansen at the time.
