After the gasoline shortage and the exponential rise in heating prices, the United Kingdom faces another setback: the country is experiencing a serious shortage of crisps, one of the favorite snacks of the British.
The chip shelves of British supermarkets are empty, and could remain so until the end of the month: since an upgrade of its computer system, the company Walkers, the largest producer of chips in the world, has experienced a significant slowdown in its production. “A recent computer system upgrade has disrupted
the supply of some of our products. Our sites continue to manufacture crisps and snacks, but on a reduced scale, "a spokesperson for the group said, Reuters news agency reported.
The UK is one of the largest consumers of crisps, with an average of two 25-gram bags of crisps consumed per week per person, or around 2.6 kilos of crisps per year.
A total of 141,000 tonnes of crisps are sold there each year. The French consume about one kilo per year and per person. The sale of crisps has also exploded in the United Kingdom during lockdowns, so much so that the government has launched television advertising campaigns to encourage people to eat healthier.
“We are doing everything we can to increase production and get people's favorite products back on the shelves. We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused, ”she added.
Walkers will therefore prioritize the production of its most popular chip flavors, including cheese and onion, salt and vinegar chips, as well as Quavers and Wotsits from its snack range.
Consumers are now turning to other brands of crisps, thus emptying the shelves, while the company, in addition to this computer failure, has suffered supply difficulties throughout the year due to the pandemic but also the Brexit, which has caused a shortage of truck drivers, as for the entire British food industry.
