Emirates Airlines, the official carrier in Dubai, announced today, Tuesday, its intention to buy 5 new cargo planes from the American company "Boeing" for $1.7 billion.
The Dubai government media office said that the company submitted a confirmed request to purchase 5 new cargo planes, in light of the recovery of the travel, aviation and air freight sector, after it suffered during the Corona crisis.
According to the statement, the company will receive two aircraft in 2024, and the remaining three aircraft in 2025.
During the current year 2022, the Emirates purchased two new Boeing aircraft, while it plans to convert 10 Boeing passenger planes into cargo planes. The conversion work is scheduled to begin in 2023, according to the local newspaper, Al-Bayan.
In June 2021, Emirates Airlines announced recording annual losses of 22.1 billion dirhams (6 billion dollars) in the fiscal year (2020-2021), which ended in March 2021, in the first annual losses in 30 years.
The group said, in a statement, that the annual losses came due to the decline in revenues caused by the impact of restrictions on flights and travel as a result of the Corona pandemic.
The group had achieved a profit of 1.7 billion dirhams (456 million dollars) in the previous year, which ended on March 31, 2020.
“Global aviation” is the sector most affected by the repercussions of Corona, and it is expected to return to pre-pandemic levels in 2024.
