According to the government agency responsible for dealing with disasters, hundreds of buildings were destroyed by heavy waves and warned that the toll could rise.

The Sunda Strait is located between the islands of Java and Sumatra, linking the Java Sea to the Indian Ocean.

The tsunami is believed to have been caused by a landslide under the sea following the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano.

Among the worst-hit areas are Tanjung Lesong Resort in western Java, and pictures of social networking sites show violent waves hitting the resort, where a famous rock band was holding a party.

The Red Cross of Indonesia says its people in the affected areas are looking for victims amid the rubble of a building.

Photos published by the head of the body show how devastated the tsunami was, as nearby streets were flooded.

The government official had posted photos by residents trying to escape in panic.

Indonesia is a tsunami-prone region, located on the so-called "fire belt", where earthquakes and volcano eruptions are frequent.

More than 2,000 people were killed in September after a powerful earthquake struck Indonesia's Sulawesi island, sparking a tsunami that flooded the coastal city of Palau.
