Iran is attacking Macron

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi, in a tweet published on Twitter, attacked French President Emmanuel Macron, calling on him to correct his statement to the name "Persian Gulf".

This comes after Macron mentioned the name "Arabian Gulf" in a tweet related to his decision to send the aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle" and French special forces to the Gulf region.

Mousavi said in a tweet today, Sunday: "We remind Mr. Macron that the Gulf in southern Iran has only one name, which is the Persian Gulf, and your military presence has an error the size of your mistake in naming it, both errors are big, but they are compensable and can be corrected."

Iranian media also criticized Macron for using what it said was the "fake name", referring to the "Arab Gulf".

The dispute over the name of the Gulf is old, and the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi had previously proposed to the late guide of the Islamic Revolution, Ruhullah Khomeini, the name of the "Islamic Gulf", but the latter rejected it.

The name "Arab Gulf" is officially used by the Arab League countries, as is the United Nations in its documents and geographical societies. As for the "Persian Gulf", it is used by Iran in its newspapers and media outlets, including those in Arabic, as mentioned in several other languages.

The French President, Emmanuel Macron, announced on the 16th of this month, the dispatch of an aircraft carrier and special forces to the Arab Gulf region.

The Arab Gulf region is the subject of special attention to France and most of the major countries, and therefore is keen on a common political and military presence in it.

The Gulf region witnessed tension after Washington assassinated the commander of the "Quds Force" in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, General Qassem Soleimani, in Baghdad on the 3rd of this month, and the days after that Tehran targeted two military bases in Iraq hosting American soldiers, on January 8th.
