Is Corona transmitted through sewage channels?

Hong Kong authorities announced the evacuation of more than 100 people from a 35-storey residential tower, due to the discovery of a second infection with the new Corona virus in the building, but on a different floor, prompting the authorities to question the possibility of transmission of infection through sanitation channels.

Medical personnel, dressed in full white protective gear, worked to verify whether the epidemic was more prevalent in the housing complex, which includes three thousand people.

The authorities confirmed that they are very vigilant about the new injuries, due to the overcrowding of the population in the city, noting that there are 7 million people, most of whom live in towers.

17 years after the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic, the memory of the “Amoy Garden” complex is still fresh in the minds of Hong Kong residents. 321 people have been infected in this Kowloon residential complex, of whom 42 have died.

The disease spread after a Chinese suffering from diarrhea to visit his brother in one of the towers of the complex, and the investigation showed at that time that the SARS virus passes horizontally in the sanitation channels of the bathrooms and spreads with great speed from one apartment to another.

The authorities indicated that the new case was for a 62-year-old woman, and her apartment is located ten layers from the flat of the man who was previously diagnosed.
"We are not sure about the method of infection," said Wong Ka-hing of the Health Protection Center, adding that it is possible that the infection is normal and comes via drops or contact.

As a precaution, the residents of all the apartments in the tower above and below the homes of the injured man and woman were evacuated and were supposed to be quarantined for 14 days.
