This number is higher than the number who died in the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong in 2002 and 2003 due to the SARS virus (severe acute respiratory syndrome), which belongs to the same strain of the emerging coronavirus.
The number of people infected with the virus in the country increased to more than 34 thousand infected.
The epidemic prompted the World Health Organization to declare a global health emergency and many governments to impose travel and airline restrictions on suspending flights to and from China.
