Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has criticized Pirelli's plans for the 2021 F1 World Series tires after drivers tested them in a free test in Bahrain on Friday.
Hamilton, who equaled Michael Schumacher's record with seven titles, said Pirelli had had two years to develop a better tire but had not.
Hamilton said that "from the drivers' point of view, they are dealing with the best companies and partners in the field of advanced technology, but after two years of development I do not know what happened."
The 35-year-old added, "If this is what they have and the best they can do, which is evident in the current situation, it is better to continue with the existing tires."
Pirelli has used the 2019 tires during the current season, and the Italian company wants to introduce tires in the 2021 season using the same materials but are designed in a different way.
Mario Isola, head of the Formula One division in Pirelli, said that every time the company introduces new tires, it is criticized and there is a change in the balance of cars.
Isola added that he is confident that the teams will find solutions to solve the problem of car balance and extract the best performance from 2021 tires.
The trials in Bahrain were the second in which drivers and teams had the opportunity to evaluate new tires, after the Portuguese Grand Prix last month.
Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel agreed with Hamilton's comments, and the German driver said, "It was not a step forward, maybe an opportunity worth trying, but I hope you don't see it again."
"If these tires were the only option in 2021, I would definitely like to stick to the 2019 tires," Vettel added.
