The Emirate of Abu Dhabi is preparing, this month, to start the trials of the first self-driving passenger car transport service in the Middle East, before spreading it to the rest of the regions and cities of the United Arab Emirates.
According to the "Bloomberg" agency website, G42 Artificial Intelligence Services, in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Government's Mubadala Investment Fund, will conduct these experiments using 5 autonomous vehicles covering 9 locations on Yas Island, which contains many giant entertainment centers.
The website stated that the second phase of the experiments will cover more places and locations in the city of Abu Dhabi, while G42 will later launch an application for this service that enables customers to book appointments through it.
The Department of Municipalities and Transport in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi had indicated earlier that it was working in coordination and cooperation with strategic partners "to develop an integrated and sustainable transport system that would improve the quality of services provided to the emirate's residents and pioneers, and achieve the objectives of the department and the integrated transport center," according to the local newspaper Al Ittihad.
Earlier this year, Cruise LLC, the self-driving car unit majority-owned by General Motors, signed an agreement to start operating self-driving taxis in Dubai in 2023.
The company will start operating a small number or vehicles in two groups for a year, and plans to deploy 4,000 Origin driverless vehicles in the emirate by 2030.
