STELLANTIS WAIVES THE REORGANIZATION OF OPEL IN GERMANY

The group born of the merger between PSA and FCA renounces a reorganization that worried the unions in Germany. Closed since September, the Opel Eisenach plant is due to reopen in early January and resume production of the Grandland SUV.

The German metalworking union IG Metall and the Stellantis group announced Wednesday an agreement in the dispute over a possible reorganization of Opel in Germany, which had also angered some politicians.

"Avoidance of transfer" of the two Opel factories

"The planned transfer of the Eisenach site and the historic Opel plant in Rüsselsheim to the Stellantis group is avoided," IG Metall said in a statement.

Stellantis, a group born from the merger of PSA (Peugeot, Citroën, Opel) with FCA (Fiat, Chrysler), said in early October that it was studying the option of making these two German Opel factories legally independent "to strengthen cooperation and flexibility in the production network ".

Once independent, the factories would no longer have been attached to the German company Opel but directly to a Stellantis entity.

But the project has triggered strong criticism from the works council and even regional politicians, the unions accusing the manufacturer of wanting, with this "dismantling", "to flee" co-management with employees, a pillar of the German economic model.

From now on, "the co-management remains guaranteed", indicates IG Metall, evoking a "great success".

  • Reopening of Eisenach at the beginning of January

Closed since the end of September due to the shortage of semiconductors, the Eisenach plant will reopen in the course of "the first week of January" and resume production of an SUV, the Grandland, whose production had been temporarily relocated to Sochaux.

The Eisenach site will certainly become its own legal entity, but will remain a branch of Opel. The Rüsselsheim plant will keep its place within the German manufacturer, said a spokesperson.

"The working conditions for all employees remain unchanged and collective agreements remain in force," said the group.

"The dismantling of Opel has been avoided and jobs are guaranteed," said Jörg Köhlinger, regional manager at IG Metall.
