Seven
people were injured, including four seriously, in an attack by a man,
who was said to be an Afghan, a knife and an iron piece in the French
capital Paris, police said.
The attack took place just before 9 pm (GMT) on the banks of a canal in the 19th district of Paris.
People playing the ball nearby threw balls at the attacker in an attempt to stop him.
He was later arrested after two men and a woman were stabbed near the Mk2 cinema along the Orc channel. The mayor of Paris thanked the police officers of the crime squad who arrested the man and thanked passers-by who tried to stop the attacker.
"We are investigating this incident very quickly and we are in close contact with the French authorities," the Foreign Office said in a statement.
"At this point, there is no indication that it could be a terrorist attack," a French police source said.
France has seen several knife attacks over the past few months, but few have been motivated by terrorism.
