The energy
drink company, Red Bull, distributed $ 650 million of its annual profits to the
founders, including the family of the farmer and the former Thai duck breeder,
who invented the popular drink as a cure for drowsiness in 1976, according to
the British newspaper "The Guardian".
The annual dividend has reached 211.4 million euros ($ 250 million) for the family of the drink’s inventor, Chalio Uveda, who died in 2012.
The profits earned by founding partner Dietrich Matischitz amounted to 343 million euros (about $ 400 million), an Austrian businessman who discovered that the drink called Krating Daeng in Thai helped him avoid the disruptions of plane travel during a business trip in 1987, and then entered into a partnership with Ufeda to promote Red Bull is abroad.
The drink turned the two men into rich people, and Yuvida, who was born to poor Chinese immigrant parents in Phichit province in northern Thailand, became the third richest person in Thailand with an estimated fortune of $ 5 billion before he died at the age of 88 in 2012.
Matischitz, a pharmaceutical marketing expert who regularly travels to Thailand, bought a 49% stake in the company in 1987, modified the composition of the drink to meet international beverage standards, and promoted it around the world.
The 76-year-old is estimated to have amassed a fortune of $ 27.5 billion, making him the richest person in Austria and among the 60 richest people in the world, according to Forbes magazine.
Matcheitz is a former pilot and skater, with properties in Salzburg, Vienna and Laucala Island in Fiji.
