HERTZ TO PROVIDE 50,000 TESLA ELECTRIC CARS TO UBER

Hertz, which caused a stir on Monday by unveiling a mega-order of 100,000 vehicles to Tesla, said on Wednesday it would make 50,000 cars made by Elon Musk's group available to Uber drivers by 2023.

The latter will be able to rent Tesla to transport their passengers to Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Washington, from November 1, then gradually to the rest of the country.

The partnership "combines the power of Tesla, Hertz and Uber to help accelerate the transition to emission-free mobility," Uber chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi said in a statement.

If the program is successful, it could be extended to 150,000 Tesla by 2026, as Hertz adds cars made by Elon Musk's group to its fleet.

Massive arrival of electricity

Hertz and Uber have already had a partnership since 2016 allowing drivers to rent cars at preferential rates, which allows them to avoid spending too much money on buying or leasing a car.

"With more and more consumers looking for or preferring EVs when they rent a car (with Hertz) or call a driver (with Uber), (this new partnership) continues to expand the market for Tesla and EVs. generally, ”said analyst Dan Ives of Wedbush.

Electric vehicles currently represent only about 3% of car purchases in the United States but this proportion could quickly increase, to 10% in 2025 for example, in view of the turn towards electric initiated by traditional manufacturers like GM and Ford. and those kinds of partnerships with Hertz, adds the analyst.

Robotaxis

Tesla is currently working on the development of an autonomous driving system, the agreement between Hertz and Uber also lays according to him "the foundations of a network of robotaxis".

Hertz also announced Wednesday a partnership with the online car sales site Carvana to sell some of the many used vehicles it puts on the market each year.

These various initiatives mark the renewed ambitions of the group, which had to put itself under the protection of the bankruptcy law at the start of the pandemic in the face of the fall in rental car reservations. The group came out in June.
