Two American companies plan to produce genetically modified strawberries to reduce waste

Two companies announced Thursday that they plan to modify the genes in strawberries to reduce waste, according to "The Hill."

JR Simplot and Plant Sciences Inc. (PSI) said they expect to produce their first commercially available genetically modified strawberry crop in the next few years.

The goal of genetically modified strawberries is to reduce waste by making strawberries have a longer shelf life.

“We are very excited to build on what we have learned with JR Simplot and fully anticipate making a profound impact on the strawberry industry by delivering better varieties with qualities that are celebrated by both growers and consumers,” said Steve Nelson, President and CEO of PSI.

The companies will use gene-editing tools known as CRISPR-Cas9 to modify strawberries, which the companies say will also reduce water needs.

Susan Colling, Vice President of Simplot Plant Sciences, said: “At Simplot, we are excited to be involved in a project that may help farmers achieve higher yields on less land, resulting in less pesticides and lower water and labor needs, all while increasing the quality of favorite foods. to the consumer.”

This isn't the first time Simplot has brought genetically modified foods to market, as the company has previously brought genetically modified potatoes to store shelves.
