What do you know about Titan Key Security Key from Google

Google said Saturday it will provide 10,000 "high-risk" users with free device security keys, days after the company warned thousands of Gmail users that they were being targeted by Russian-sponsored hackers.

The alert, sent by Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG), alerted more than 14,000 Gmail users that they had been targeted in a phishing campaign by APT28, also known as "Fancy Bear," which is said to be made up of Intelligence agents in Russia.

"Fancy Bear" is a group of hackers sponsored by Russian intelligence, which has been active for more than a decade, and they have extensive hacking activities in the United States; Such as hacking the Democratic National Committee, disinformation campaign and influencing elections in the run-up to the 2016 US presidential election.

"The pattern of these warnings is indicative of targeting rather than compromising, and these warnings are normal for individuals such as activists, journalists and government officials because these are the ones targeted by government-backed entities," said Shane Huntley, director of TAG at Google.

Google said in a blog post: "It will send out security keys throughout 2021 to encourage users to enroll in the Advanced Protection Program (APP), which protects users with high visibility and sensitive information from the risk of targeted online attacks."

Security Key is a special tool from Google that only allows its holder to access mail and accounts, and provides a very high protection against device intrusion.

Security keys make it more difficult for phishing attacks to work, as security keys can only be used to unlock accounts on legitimate websites.

And Google indicated that the most targeted parties that Google will begin to protect through security keys are (the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), the United Nations Women, and non-profit organizations that publish digital defenses).

Google said it previously provided Titan Security Keys to more than 180 federal entities during the 2020 US election season, adding that it is now working to provide more protection for political campaigns from nationwide hacking.
