Morocco invests $1.6 billion in wind energy generation

On Monday night, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Kingdom will allocate 14.5 billion dirhams (about 1.6 billion dollars) in a program to generate wind energy.

In a statement via Twitter, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that the Kingdom plans to "increase the contribution of renewable energies in the energy mix to 52 percent by 2030."

She added that "by the year 2024, the Moroccan energy-for-profit program will be activated, with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts," noting that the kingdom will set up stations to produce electricity "across the national territory, from Tangiers to Dakhla."

The ministry stated that Morocco has managed, in recent years, to "achieve a set of gains in the environmental field, through a number of projects and programs that have strengthened its presence at the international level in this field."

She enumerated part of the Moroccan achievements, stating that Morocco is the first country in Africa and in the world in the climate performance index, and that the Kingdom ranked "fourth in terms of climate performance, according to the classification of the New Climate Institute and the International Network for Climate Action."

The ministry confirmed that Morocco supplies 2 million people with clean energy electricity, and "thanks to the Nour plant, which is the largest solar power plant in the world, the emission of one million tons of greenhouse gases annually is avoided."

She added that Morocco currently produces more than 4,000 megawatts of renewable energies, noting that 37 percent of the total electric power is provided by renewable energy means, and expected that the Kingdom will be able to raise this percentage to 52 percent by 2030.
