A new Algerian plan to confront Corona

Algeria is seeking to vaccinate sixty percent of the population of the major states most affected by Covid-19, in addition to raising the percentage of oxygen bottles in the country, according to a statement by the presidency after the cabinet meeting, Sunday.

And the statement of the Presidency of the Republic stated that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had ordered "accelerating the pace of vaccination to achieve group immunity, especially in the most affected and most intense states, to reach at least 60 percent of the number of vaccinated people."

These states are "Algiers, Oran, Setif and Constantine", which is one of the states most affected by Corona, with a total population of about 5.5 million people out of 44 million Algerians.

The number of vaccinated people in Algeria reached more than four million people, including less than a million who received two doses, although the rate has accelerated during the past two weeks, reaching 200,000 people per day.

According to the head of the National Agency for Health Security, Professor Kamal Sunhaji, "to overcome the crisis and reach herd immunity, 400,000 people must be vaccinated daily," he told public radio.

He added that "400,000 vaccination doses per day would enable 50 percent immunity by the beginning of autumn" in September.

Tebboune also ordered to raise oxygen production "from 360,000 liters currently to 470,000 liters", in addition to importing 100,000 liters via ships every two days.

For about three weeks, Algeria has been experiencing a shortage of oxygen in hospitals after the number of injuries rose to 1,927 daily on July 28, which made hospitals unable to cope with large numbers of patients.

According to Professor Abdel-Razzaq Bouamra, who is in charge of following up on the situation of the epidemic in the state of Tipasa, near the Algerian capital, Algeria is today "in the second week of the peak of the epidemic, and it will leave it at the beginning of next week."

In a statement to state television, he added, "The decline in the number of injured will require several weeks, and we may witness the curve rise again" in the event of laxity in respect of quarantine and prevention measures.
