Qatar signs air transport agreement with Europe

The Qatari Ministry of Transport and Communications announced the signing of a comprehensive air transport agreement with the European Union, the first of its kind in the Gulf countries.

The ministry said in a statement, Monday, that the agreement will replace the bilateral agreements signed, without canceling the previous rights granted to the State of Qatar, or to the member states of the European Union.

The signing of the agreement came in Luxembourg, in the presence of the Qatari Minister of Transport and Communications Jassim bin Saif Al-Sulaiti, and on the part of the European Union, Anzi Lugar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, whose country holds the current rotating presidency of the Union.

Under the agreement, the companies concerned from all countries will enjoy easy and free access to the market with less restrictions, to further enhance the opportunity for competition.

The statement continued: "The agreement is keen to implement the principles of (ICAO) by providing fair and equal opportunities for all parties."

The agreement will allow the Qatari national carrier to easily enter European markets (without restrictions), and expand its network in the European Union, with the possibility of linking it to the rest of the line networks without restrictions on loads or the number of flights.

In the statement, the Qatari Minister of Transport said: "The agreement will benefit all parties, and it is the first of its kind in the Gulf region."

Al-Sulaiti added that the agreement will allow for gradual liberalization in stages within four years, after which the markets will be completely liberated.

The national carrier (Qatar Airways) continues to rebuild its network of destinations, as it currently operates flights to more than 140 destinations globally, to gradually recover from the repercussions of the Corona pandemic.
