"Liverpool legend" at the helm of Aston Villa

Aston Villa announced, Thursday, the appointment of Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard, as its coach, to succeed Dean Smith.

A statement on the club's official website read, "Aston Villa is pleased to announce the appointment of Steven Gerrard as the new coach of the team, as he led Glasgow Rangers to the Scottish Premier League title last season, ending the championship without any loss," which is the first title for the team in the last ten years.

Aston Villa sacked Dean, on Sunday, after the poor results of the team, which is ranked sixteenth in the Premier League, after seven defeats, a draw and three wins.

After a brilliant career with Liverpool and one season at the Los Angeles Galaxy before retiring in 2016, Gerrard (41) took over at Rangers in 2018 after briefly overseeing the Liverpool academy.

"Aston Villa is a club with a rich history and tradition in English football and I am very proud to be their new coach," said the former England international.

Christian Purslow, chief executive of the Birmingham-based club, said: "Since his transition to coaching after his illustrious career as a player, Stephen has begun managing and developing the best young players in the Liverpool academy, an experience we greatly value at Aston Villa."

Although he did not achieve the Premier League title in a 17-year career with Liverpool, Gerrard proved that he is one of the best midfielders that English and international football has known, and led the “Reds” to the most expensive title in 2005 when he was crowned champion of the Champions League in the crazy final. Against AC Milan in Istanbul, when the English team compensated for its 3-0 delay in the first half to win on penalties.
